The Kray Files made public!!!.... 19/10/01

Files held by the Public Records Office and due to stay closed until 2032 have now been released early after a request by Labour MP Harry Cohen.

The first 'revelations' to appear in the newspapers are anonymous letters sent to the police one claiming that they were feared by people in authority and within their own community and another putting The Kray Twins in the frame for the murder of George Cornell.

One memo reports that "Their reputation is already such that not one victim can be persuaded to giver evidence against them"

The police also claim that a confidante of Ron, Charles Clark told them in an interview that Ron was tormented by his homosexuality which contradicts Laurie O Leary's book 'Men amongst Men' where he is portrayed as a man totally at ease with his sexuality.

Clark also said that Ron once said that the tragedy of his life was that he was the twin that was born the wrong way round sexually and he wanted to turn in his life of crime and turn over a new leaf.

How true these particular statements are is anyones guess. But I can believe that Ron was confused to say the least. He had always wanted to be a gangster. The american gangster movies of the 50's and 60's only reinforced this dream. But the big, tough talking, hard hitting screen idol images probably didn't equate to the homosexual, boy loving feelings that Ron had for his fellow man!

He may have thought ,that in an ideal world, he would liked to have been 'normal'. But he never hid his sexuality.

It never diminished the fear that people had of him. It didn't tarnish the image that he set out to portray.

My opinion is that Ron could have said these things but I can in no way believe that he was" tortured by his homosexuality".
